How to get to and from the Airport and the City
The Cairo International Airport (or heliport as it is known locally), Cairo's airport is around 25 kilometres (approximately 17 miles) from the Cairo city center. Almost all the international and larger local hotels have a transport service. The trip by taxi or private hotel car or bus takes around 25 minutes. Public transport is available through the number 356 airport service bus which operates from 5.45 am to 11.00 pm each day. You can board the bus at the car parks at terminals one and two, and ride on the bus to the square at the rear of the Egyptian Museum. The bus fare is about LE2 per person plus LE1 for each item of luggage. There are streams of taxis available at both airport terminals. Try for an official taxi and ask for a quote before you start on your journey. The cost should be no more than LE 25 to LE 35.
What about tipping in Cairo?
How much should I tip?
Baksheesh is the local word for tipping right throughout Egypt. Because of the influx of tourists, especially to areas where the pyramids are, tipping has become quite widespread. In the restaurants and the larger hotels 10% to 15% is the norm. Everybody else from taxi drivers to attendants at the pyramids and museums, to camel drivers and tour guides will also expect a tip, however this is entirely at your discretion. Workers in Egypt are paid low wages and tipping has become an accepted and widespread part of the daily life, particularly in Cairo because of the huge tourist numbers that pass through this city. US dollars are a particularly valued form of currency and one or two of these can mean a lot to a low paid worker who is trying to please you with his or her service.
